Overview

Bifidobacterium longum + Lactobacillus reuteri is a probiotic combination of two specific bacterial species intended to support gut health. This combination is being clinically investigated for a range of health benefits by modulating the gut microbiome. Clinical trials have explored its use in reducing uremic toxins in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), alleviating anxiety and depression in postoperative colorectal cancer patients, and preventing Periodic Fever, Aphthous Stomatitis, Pharyngitis, and Cervical Adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome. The proposed mechanism involves the introduction of beneficial bacteria to the gut, which is believed to reduce harmful microbiota-derived toxins, decrease systemic inflammation, and positively influence the gut-brain and gut-kidney axes. The specific strains used in trials include Bifidobacterium longum BB536 and Lactobacillus reuteri DSM17938.
