Overview

Bifonazole + chlorhexidine is a topical combination antimicrobial therapy primarily used for the treatment of superficial fungal infections. Bifonazole is a broad-spectrum imidazole antifungal that uniquely exerts a dual mechanism of action by inhibiting both lanosterol 14α-demethylase and HMG-CoA reductase, which leads to the depletion of ergosterol and subsequent disruption of fungal cell membrane integrity. Chlorhexidine is a cationic biguanide antiseptic that provides complementary antimicrobial activity by binding to negatively charged microbial cell walls, causing membrane disruption and leakage of cytoplasmic contents. This combination is particularly indicated for dermatomycoses such as tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea manuum, tinea corporis, and tinea cruris, especially in cases where secondary bacterial contamination may be present. It was developed by Shanghai Pharmaceutical Technology Development Co., Ltd. and is typically formulated as a topical solution or spray.
