BIIB033 + interferon beta-1a is an investigational combination therapy for **multiple sclerosis** (MS). BIIB033 (also known as opicinumab or anti-LINGO-1) is a human monoclonal antibody that targets LINGO-1, a protein that inhibits oligodendrocyte differentiation and thus myelin repair. By antagonizing LINGO-1, opicinumab is designed to promote remyelination and neuroprotection in demyelinating diseases. It is combined with interferon beta-1a, an approved disease-modifying therapy for MS (notably branded as Avonex), which reduces inflammation and modulates the immune response. The combination was studied to determine if BIIB033 could enhance repair processes in patients receiving immunomodulatory background therapy with interferon beta-1a[1][2][6].
