Overview

Biktarvy-Brigham and Women's Hospital refers to a specialized formulation of the FDA-approved HIV-1 medication Biktarvy (a fixed-dose combination of bictegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide) modified with TruTag Technologies' silica microparticle taggants. Developed by Brigham and Women's Hospital, this system is designed to monitor medication adherence in people living with HIV. The silica microparticles are incorporated into the tablet coating and can be scanned using a smartphone camera and a companion app to record adherence events. The underlying medication, Biktarvy, functions by inhibiting HIV-1 replication through the combined action of an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (bictegravir) and two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide).
