Overview

The bimatoprost + timolol ocular insert is a sustained-release drug delivery system developed by ForSight Vision5 (later acquired by Allergan) for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. The device is a non-invasive, preservative-free peri-ocular ring that rests in the conjunctival fornix, providing continuous elution of both active ingredients over several weeks. Bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analog, lowers intraocular pressure by increasing uveoscleral outflow through the activation of prostaglandin F receptors. Timolol, a non-selective beta-adrenergic antagonist, complements this effect by reducing the production of aqueous humor in the ciliary body. This combination approach aims to improve patient compliance by replacing daily eye drops with a long-acting insert.
