Overview

Bio-K+ is a **probiotic combination** containing three specific strains: *Lactobacillus acidophilus* CL1285, *Lactobacillus casei* LBC80R, and *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* CLR2. This product has been **marketed in North America since 1996** for digestive health, especially the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and *Clostridioides difficile* (formerly *Clostridium difficile*) infection. Clinical studies demonstrate that Bio-K+ may reduce the incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and *C. difficile* infection and improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), especially diarrhea-predominant IBS. The mechanism of action involves colonization of the gut by these lactobacilli strains, competitive inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, production of lactic acid (which lowers intestinal pH and inhibits pathogens), direct antimicrobial activity, and possible toxin neutralization. The formulation is available in various forms including enteric-coated capsules and fermented beverages, and is considered to have a strong safety profile, with strains and products evaluated for identity, stability, and gastrointestinal survival[1][3][5][7].
