Overview

Bio-K+ is a proprietary probiotic formulation consisting of three specific, patented strains of live bacteria: *Lactobacillus acidophilus* CL1285, *Lactobacillus casei* LBC80R, and *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* CLR2. Developed by Bio-K Plus International (now a part of Kerry Group), this product is extensively studied for its efficacy in gastrointestinal health, particularly in the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) and *Clostridioides difficile* infections (CDI). The mechanism of action involves the restoration of the intestinal microbiota balance, competitive exclusion of enteric pathogens, and the production of antimicrobial metabolites such as lactic acid. Bio-K+ is unique in its delivery system, which includes fermented liquid substrates and enteric-coated capsules designed to protect the bacteria from gastric acidity, ensuring high viability upon reaching the intestinal tract. It is widely used in clinical and hospital settings as a prophylactic intervention for patients undergoing intensive antibiotic therapy.
