Overview
Biovanta is an aspirin-based throat spray developed by Applied Biological Laboratories for the treatment of common cold symptoms and pharyngitis (sore throat). The formulation combines a low dose of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) with a proprietary Mucosal Immune Complex (MIC) consisting of lysozyme, lactoferrin, and aloe. Aspirin acts as an irreversible inhibitor of the cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2, which reduces the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in the respiratory epithelia. By targeting inflammation locally at the site of infection, the spray aims to alleviate pain and upper respiratory symptoms more effectively than systemic treatments. It has been evaluated in clinical trials for its efficacy in reducing sore throat pain within the early stages of a common cold.
