Overview

Birch pollen extract combined with ragweed pollen extract is a form of allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) used to treat individuals with co-sensitization to both types of pollen. This therapy, often administered as subcutaneous injections (allergy shots), works by gradually exposing the patient's immune system to controlled doses of the allergens. The goal is to induce immunological tolerance, shifting the immune response from an allergic (Th2-dominated) to a non-allergic (Th1/Treg-dominated) state. This process reduces the severity of allergic rhinitis and/or asthma symptoms upon natural exposure to birch and ragweed pollen and can decrease the need for symptom-relieving medications. Clinical studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in both younger and older patient populations with a history of inadequately controlled allergies.
