Overview

bIRV AB is a bivalent nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (modRNA) vaccine candidate developed by Pfizer in collaboration with BioNTech for the prevention of seasonal influenza. The vaccine encodes the hemagglutinin (HA) proteins of two seasonally adapted influenza strains, specifically one Influenza A strain and one Influenza B strain. It utilizes the same lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated modRNA platform as the Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine to induce protective immune responses. In Phase 1/2 clinical trials, bIRV AB demonstrated an acceptable safety and tolerability profile, with mostly mild-to-moderate local and systemic reactions, and elicited hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) antibody responses comparable to those of licensed quadrivalent influenza vaccines.
