Overview

bisacodyl + peg-cs refers to a low-volume bowel preparation regimen consisting of bisacodyl tablets and a 2-liter polyethylene glycol-citrate-simethicone (PEG-CS) solution. Developed and evaluated by the European Institute of Oncology, this combination is used for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy procedures, including colorectal cancer screening and diagnostic investigations. Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative that promotes colonic motility by acting on the colonic mucosa and enteric nervous system. PEG-CS is an osmotic laxative formulation where polyethylene glycol retains water in the intestinal lumen to increase stool volume and facilitate evacuation. The citrate component acts as a buffer to maintain electrolyte balance, while simethicone serves as an anti-foaming agent to reduce gas bubbles and improve the quality of the endoscopic view. Clinical studies have shown that this low-volume regimen provides comparable cleansing efficacy to standard 4-liter PEG preparations with significantly better patient tolerability and compliance.
