Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The bivalent enterovirus vaccine EV71 + CA16 is an inactivated biologic vaccine developed by Sinovac Biotech for the prevention of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). It is designed to elicit a protective immune response against two of the most common causative agents of HFMD: Enterovirus 71 (EV71) and Coxsackievirus A16 (CA16). By incorporating inactivated forms of both viruses, the vaccine aims to provide broader protection than existing monovalent EV71 vaccines. Sinovac received regulatory approval to begin clinical trials in China in July 2023 and initiated Phase I studies in September 2023, targeting infants and young children who are most susceptible to the disease.
