Overview

Bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV) is a live-attenuated vaccine containing attenuated Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1 and 3. It was developed to replace the trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV) as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, following the eradication of wild poliovirus type 2. By removing the type 2 component, bOPV reduces the risk of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) and the emergence of circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPVs) related to type 2. The vaccine is administered orally, where it replicates in the intestinal tract to induce both local mucosal immunity (IgA) and systemic humoral immunity (IgG). PT Bio Farma is a major developer and manufacturer of this vaccine, which is widely used in routine childhood immunization programs and mass vaccination campaigns globally.
