Overview

bOPV (bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine) is a live-attenuated vaccine used for the prevention of poliomyelitis. It contains Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1 and 3. Introduced globally in 2016 to replace the trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV) following the eradication of wild poliovirus type 2, bOPV is a critical tool in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The vaccine works by inducing both systemic (humoral) and intestinal (mucosal) immunity, which is essential for preventing person-to-person transmission of the virus. It is typically administered as oral drops and is used in routine childhood immunization schedules and mass vaccination campaigns.
