Overview

Bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV) is a live-attenuated vaccine containing Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1 and 3. It was developed to replace the trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV) in routine immunization programs following the global eradication of wild poliovirus type 2, thereby reducing the risk of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) and circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPV) associated with the type 2 component. The University of Chile has been involved in Phase 4 clinical research (such as the IPV 002ABMG study) to evaluate the effectiveness of sequential immunization schedules combining inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) and bOPV. These studies aim to optimize humoral and intestinal immunity to prevent both individual disease and community transmission.
