Overview

Bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV) is a live-attenuated biologic vaccine containing Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1 and 3. It was introduced globally in 2016 to replace the trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV) as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's strategy to eliminate vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2. The vaccine is administered orally and is highly effective at inducing mucosal immunity in the intestines, which is essential for stopping the transmission of wild poliovirus. It is primarily indicated for active immunization against poliomyelitis in infants and children, particularly in endemic or high-risk regions. Major manufacturers include GSK, which markets the vaccine under the brand name Polio Sabin One and Three.
