Overview

The bivalent Shigella (Flexneri 2a + Sonnei) conjugate vaccine is a bacterial vaccine developed by Beijing Green Bamboo Biological Pharmacy for the prevention of shigellosis (bacillary dysentery). It is composed of the O-specific polysaccharides (OSP) of *Shigella flexneri* serotype 2a and *Shigella sonnei* individually conjugated to a carrier protein, typically tetanus toxoid (TT). This conjugation converts the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigens into T-cell dependent antigens, enhancing immunogenicity and inducing immunological memory, which is particularly critical for protection in infants and young children. The vaccine has been evaluated in Phase I and Phase II clinical trials in China to determine optimal dosage, scheduling, and the necessity of adjuvants such as aluminum hydroxide.
