BK-SE36 + CpG is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate designed to prevent blood-stage *Plasmodium falciparum* malaria. It consists of the N-terminal domain of the *P. falciparum* serine repeat antigen 5 (SERA5/SE36) protein, which is adsorbed to an aluminum hydroxide gel (forming BK-SE36) and co-administered with the synthetic oligodeoxynucleotide adjuvant CpG-ODN(K3). The CpG-ODN(K3) component acts as a Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) agonist to enhance the immunogenicity of the SE36 antigen. Developed by Nobelpharma in collaboration with researchers at Osaka University, the vaccine aims to induce protective antibodies against the parasite's blood-stage infection. It has undergone Phase 1 clinical evaluation in both malaria-naïve Japanese adults and malaria-exposed populations in Burkina Faso.
