Overview

BK virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are an adoptive cellular immunotherapy developed by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for treating BK polyomavirus (BKV) infections in immunocompromised patients, such as those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell or renal transplantation. The therapy consists of T cells manufactured to specifically target BKV antigens, including the VP1 capsid protein and the large T antigen. These cells are typically produced using the Miltenyi CliniMACS Prodigy system with gamma-capture technology, allowing for the selection of virus-reactive T cells from HLA-matched donors. By replenishing the patient's immune system with virus-specific effectors, the treatment aims to control viral replication and resolve clinical complications like hemorrhagic cystitis and BKV-associated nephropathy.
