Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bojungikki-tang + pembrolizumab is an investigational combination therapy comprising Bojungikki-tang (BJIKT), a traditional East Asian herbal medicine formula, and pembrolizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1). BJIKT is composed of multiple medicinal herbs and has been traditionally used to enhance digestive function and immune response. Preclinical studies suggest that BJIKT can modulate the tumor microenvironment by improving T cell activity and reducing immunosuppression. When combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors like pembrolizumab, BJIKT has demonstrated synergistic anti-tumor effects in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) models by enhancing the anti-cancer immune response without significant pharmacokinetic interactions or added toxicity. Pembrolizumab acts as an immune checkpoint inhibitor by blocking PD-1 on T cells to restore anti-tumor immunity. The combination is currently being evaluated in phase 2 clinical trials for advanced NSCLC to assess efficacy (progression-free survival) and safety compared to standard monotherapy[1][2][3][5].
