Bone marrow + eptotermin alfa is an investigational combination therapy consisting of autologous unconcentrated bone marrow and recombinant bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7, also known as eptotermin alfa or OP-1). Developed by the University Hospital of Lille (CHU de Lille), this treatment was designed as an adjunct to core decompression (surgical drilling) for patients with Ficat stage I-III osteonecrosis (avascular necrosis) of the femoral head. The autologous bone marrow serves as a source of osteogenic stem cells, while BMP7, a member of the TGF-beta superfamily, acts as a potent inducer of bone formation by stimulating the differentiation of mesenchymal cells into osteoblasts. The clinical development of this combination was terminated following the discontinuation of BMP7's commercial availability by its manufacturer, Stryker.
