Overview

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) is an autologous biological therapy produced by concentrating a patient's bone marrow aspirate, typically harvested from the iliac crest. The concentration process, usually performed via centrifugation at the point of care, yields a heterogeneous population of cells including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), hematopoietic stem cells, and platelets. BMAC is rich in growth factors such as transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), as well as anti-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra). In the treatment of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) of the knee, BMAC is administered via intra-articular injection to modulate the joint's inflammatory environment, promote chondrogenic differentiation, and support the repair of damaged cartilage and meniscal tissues. The Affinity Health Research Institute is specifically investigating BMAC as a standalone intervention and as a component of the ERIPTO protocol to evaluate its clinical and radiographic impact on knee PTOA progression.
