Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Disease for the treatment of severe COVID-19. These multipotent cells are administered intravenously and function primarily through their potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. By inhibiting the overactivation of pathogenic T cells and inflammatory monocytes, BM-MSCs help to mitigate the 'cytokine storm' and systemic inflammation that drive acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in COVID-19 patients. Additionally, they are thought to promote lung tissue repair and regeneration, potentially improving survival and recovery in critically ill individuals.
