Overview

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the SCARM Institute for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Administered via intra-articular injection directly into the knee joint, these multipotent cells are intended to address the underlying pathology of osteoarthritis by modulating the inflammatory environment and potentially facilitating the regeneration of damaged articular cartilage. The therapeutic effect is primarily attributed to the paracrine secretion of various cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors that exert immunomodulatory and trophic effects on the joint tissues. This specific product has been evaluated in a triple-blind, randomized Phase 2 clinical trial in Tabriz, Iran, where its efficacy was compared against stromal vascular fraction (SVF) and placebo in patients with severe knee joint degeneration.
