This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived human mesenchymal stem (stromal) cells (MSCs), developed by the University Hospital Tuebingen. It is specifically being evaluated for the treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) in patients suffering from severe COVID-19. MSCs are multipotent stromal cells characterized by their significant immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. The therapy aims to mitigate the hyper-inflammatory state and immune dysregulation, often termed a 'cytokine storm,' that leads to lung injury in SARS-CoV-2 infections. By secreting various paracrine factors, these cells promote the resolution of inflammation and support the repair of damaged alveolar tissue.
