This is an experimental cell-based therapy developed by the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research, consisting of allogeneic, ex vivo-expanded mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from bone marrow. The therapy is specifically investigated for the treatment of cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with solid tumors. The mechanism of action involves the cells' ability to migrate to the site of injury and exert paracrine effects, secreting various growth factors and anti-apoptotic signals that facilitate the repair and protection of damaged renal tubular epithelial cells. A Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT01275612) was conducted to evaluate the safety, feasibility, and dose-escalation of a single intravenous infusion of these cells in patients at risk of nephrotoxicity following chemotherapy.
