Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) developed by the University of Liège are an investigational cell therapy being evaluated for the treatment of severe to critical COVID-19 pneumonia. These cells are administered intravenously and function by modulating the dysregulated immune response and inflammatory cascade, often referred to as a cytokine storm, associated with COVID-19-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). BM-MSCs aim to limit systemic inflammation, induce immune cells into a regulatory phenotype, and promote lung tissue repair. The therapy is typically administered as a series of three intravenous infusions at 3-day intervals alongside standard supportive care, such as dexamethasone. The cells are expanded at the Laboratory of Cell and Gene Therapy (LTCG) at the University of Liège.
