Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) are botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) products used primarily for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe dynamic facial wrinkles, such as lateral orbital rhytids (crow's feet) and glabellar lines. Botox Cosmetic, developed by Allergan (now part of AbbVie), is a vacuum-dried, purified botulinum toxin type A complex. Dysport, developed by Ipsen and distributed by Galderma (formerly Medicis), is a lyophilized form of abobotulinumtoxinA. Both agents act as neurotoxins by cleaving the SNAP-25 protein within the SNARE complex of peripheral cholinergic nerve endings. This action prevents the release of acetylcholine into the neuromuscular junction, resulting in localized muscle relaxation. A Phase 4 clinical trial conducted by The Maas Clinic compared the two products in a split-face study design to evaluate their relative efficacy, onset of action, and duration in treating crow's feet.
