Overview

Botulinum toxin type A is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium *Clostridium botulinum*, widely used in aesthetic and therapeutic medicine as a neuromodulator. It acts by entering presynaptic nerve terminals at the neuromuscular junction and enzymatically cleaving SNAP-25 (Synaptosomal-associated protein 25), a key component of the SNARE protein complex. This cleavage prevents the fusion of acetylcholine vesicles with the cell membrane, thereby blocking the release of the neurotransmitter and resulting in temporary muscle paralysis. In the context of the Hexsel Dermatology Clinic research, this refers to the comparative evaluation of two major commercial preparations, onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) and abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport), specifically for the treatment of moderate to severe forehead wrinkles. The study focused on comparing the 'action halos' or field of effect and the duration of muscle activity reduction between these two products.
