Overview

Botulism Immune Globulin Intravenous (Human), marketed under the brand name BabyBIG (also known as BIG-IV), is a human-derived immunoglobulin biologic developed and manufactured by the California Department of Public Health. It is composed of purified immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies harvested from the pooled plasma of adult donors who have been immunized with botulinum toxoid types A and B. The drug acts by providing passive immunity; the antibodies bind to and neutralize circulating botulinum neurotoxin type A and botulinum neurotoxin type B, preventing them from attaching to nerve endings and causing paralysis. BabyBIG is specifically indicated for the treatment of infant botulism caused by toxin types A or B in patients under one year of age. Approved by the FDA in 2003 as an orphan drug, it has been shown to significantly reduce the duration of hospital stays, mechanical ventilation, and intensive care requirements.
