Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and noggin is a combination therapy that induces striatal neuronal regeneration. BDNF acts as a key molecule involved in plastic changes related to learning and memory, while noggin suppresses gliogenesis. When administered together, they work synergistically - noggin suppresses subependymal gliogenesis, expanding the pool of subventricular zone cells that can respond to neuronal instruction by BDNF. This combination has been shown to induce striatal neuronal addition, delay motor impairment, and extend survival in R6/2 mice (a Huntington's disease model), suggesting potential therapeutic applications in neurodegenerative diseases.
