Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Broccoli sprout + broccoli seed extract, marketed under the brand name Avmacol®, is a botanical dietary supplement and natural product derived from broccoli sprout and seed extract powder. Its primary active ingredient is glucoraphanin, a glucosinolate that is hydrolyzed in the body to sulforaphane. Sulforaphane is a potent inducer of the Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) pathway, which regulates the expression of cytoprotective phase II enzymes. By upregulating this pathway, the supplement enhances the detoxification and elimination of environmental toxins and tobacco-related carcinogens, such as benzene, acrolein, and crotonaldehyde. It is being developed and studied by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Division of Cancer Prevention as a chemopreventive agent specifically for current heavy smokers to reduce the risk of tobacco-related carcinomas.
