Overview
Wobenzym Plus is an orally administered systemic enzyme combination consisting of the proteolytic enzymes bromelain and trypsin, combined with the flavonoid rutoside trihydrate (rutin). Developed originally by Dr. Max Wolf and further studied by institutions like the Technical University of Munich, it is currently marketed by Nestlé Health Science. The drug functions by modulating the immune response to restore a healthy balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, while also exerting analgesic, anti-edematous, and anti-inflammatory effects. Its biological targets include inflammatory mediators, platelet aggregation pathways, and protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR-2). It is approved as a pharmaceutical in several European and CIS countries for the treatment of inflammation, joint conditions such as osteoarthritis, post-traumatic swelling, and vein inflammation.
