Overview

A combination of bromhexine and hydroxychloroquine being studied as a prophylactic treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Bromhexine is a mucolytic agent that specifically inhibits the transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2), which is crucial for SARS-CoV-2 entry into cells. It also modifies mucus composition, increases ciliary clearance, and decreases coughing, improving respiratory symptoms. Hydroxychloroquine is being used in this combination at a low dose (200 mg daily). This combination aims to prevent COVID-19 infection by targeting different aspects of viral entry and replication.
