Budesonide + albuterol (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) refers to an investigational combination therapy evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The study investigated the impact of adding a 2 mg dose of nebulized budesonide inhalation suspension to standard emergency department treatment—which included albuterol, ipratropium bromide, and systemic corticosteroids—for children aged 2 to 18 years presenting with moderate to severe acute asthma. Budesonide is a potent synthetic corticosteroid that reduces airway inflammation by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, while albuterol is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that provides rapid bronchodilation. The trial aimed to determine if this combination could reduce asthma severity more rapidly than standard therapy alone; however, the results published in 2011 indicated no significant difference in asthma scores at two hours between the budesonide and placebo groups.
