Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BFF (PT009) is a fixed-dose combination of budesonide and formoterol fumarate delivered via a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) using AstraZeneca's proprietary Aerosphere delivery technology. This technology utilizes porous phospholipid particles to create a stable co-suspension, ensuring uniform drug delivery and consistent dosing. Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) that reduces airway inflammation by activating glucocorticoid receptors, while formoterol fumarate is a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) that induces bronchodilation by stimulating beta-2 adrenergic receptors. Developed by AstraZeneca (following the acquisition of Pearl Therapeutics), BFF is primarily indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is currently being evaluated in Phase III trials, such as the VATHOS study, to compare its efficacy and safety against budesonide monotherapy and other established formulations like the Symbicort Turbuhaler.
