Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Budesonide + salmeterol** is a fixed-dose inhaled combination of budesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid, and salmeterol, a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist. Budesonide activates the glucocorticoid receptor to suppress inflammatory signaling, airway edema, and inflammatory-cell activity, while salmeterol provides prolonged beta-2 adrenergic receptor-mediated bronchodilation. The combination is used as maintenance treatment for asthma; marketed European dry-powder capsule products include Busalair, Zephirus, Desoterol, Duastmin, and ReviX Axahaler. It is not intended for rapid relief of acute bronchospasm.
