budesonide + surfactant

Budesonide + surfactant is a combination therapy used primarily for the prevention and treatment of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). This therapy involves mixing budesonide (a glucocorticoid) with pulmonary surfactant and administering it intratracheally. The surfactant acts as a vehicle for budesonide, enhancing its solubility and absorption in the lungs. Budesonide provides anti-inflammatory effects while the surfactant reduces surface tension in the lungs. Studies have shown that this combination can decrease the severity of BPD, reduce the need for mechanical ventilation, and lead to earlier hospital discharge compared to surfactant alone.
