Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bupivacaine collagen sponge, marketed under the brand name XaraColl, is a drug-device combination product developed by Innocoll for the management of postoperative pain. It consists of a biodegradable and fully bioresorbable collagen matrix derived from bovine tendon, impregnated with the local anesthetic bupivacaine hydrochloride. Utilizing Innocoll's proprietary CollaRx technology, the implant is placed directly into the surgical site during closure, where it provides sustained release of bupivacaine for up to 96 hours. Bupivacaine acts by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby inhibiting nerve conduction and providing localized analgesia. The collagen matrix also provides hemostatic properties and supports the natural wound-healing process. It was FDA-approved in 2020 for use in adults following open inguinal hernia repair.
