Overview

This combination injection, developed by Lowcountry Infectious Diseases, was investigated for the treatment of restless legs syndrome (RLS). The formulation contains the local anesthetics bupivacaine and lidocaine, the corticosteroid methylprednisolone (Depo-Medrol), and absolute alcohol as a neurolytic agent. The treatment is based on the hypothesis that RLS symptoms may originate from peripheral nerve damage, specifically neuromas in the 3rd and 4th common digital foot nerves, rather than solely from central nervous system dysfunction. By injecting this mixture into the affected foot nerves, the therapy aims to provide long-term relief through a combination of anesthesia, inflammation reduction, and chemical neurolysis of the damaged nerve tissue.
