Overview

This combination therapy consists of bupivacaine, a long-acting local anesthetic, and triamcinolone acetonide, a synthetic corticosteroid. It is administered as a superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) block during microdirect laryngoscopy for benign vocal fold lesions, such as polyps and cysts. Bupivacaine acts by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse conduction and providing regional anesthesia. Triamcinolone acetonide acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, exerting anti-inflammatory effects to reduce postoperative edema and irritation. The combination is being evaluated by Rutgers University to improve patient outcomes, specifically by reducing postoperative pain and coughing while improving voice recovery.
