Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Extended-release buprenorphine is a long-acting injectable formulation of the partial mu-opioid agonist buprenorphine, specifically developed for the treatment of moderate-to-severe opioid use disorder (OUD). Administered subcutaneously, typically on a monthly or weekly basis, the medication forms a depot that releases buprenorphine at a controlled rate to maintain steady-state therapeutic plasma levels. This formulation is designed to suppress opioid withdrawal symptoms and cravings while significantly reducing the risk of medication diversion and improving treatment adherence compared to daily transmucosal products. NYU Langone Health is evaluating the clinical utility of this formulation within the carceral system through the SO-BUP trial, which compares the effectiveness of initiating treatment at the time of jail admission versus shortly before release to optimize post-release outcomes and reduce overdose risk.
