Drug intelligence / Profile preview
XR-B refers to extended-release buprenorphine, a long-acting injectable formulation of the partial mu-opioid receptor agonist buprenorphine. It is primarily used for the treatment of moderate-to-severe opioid use disorder (OUD) as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes counseling and psychosocial support. By providing sustained therapeutic levels of buprenorphine, XR-B helps to reduce opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms while blocking the effects of other opioids. This formulation is designed to improve treatment adherence by reducing the frequency of administration to monthly or weekly injections, compared to daily transmucosal buprenorphine. It is often studied in high-risk populations, such as individuals transitioning from the criminal justice system to the community, to facilitate continuity of care and reduce the risk of relapse and overdose post-release.
