Overview

**Buprenorphine + ropivacaine** is a combination used primarily in regional anesthesia and pain management, especially for lower limb and orthopedic surgeries. **Ropivacaine** is an amide-type local anesthetic that works by blocking sodium channels, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse conduction and causing local loss of sensation. **Buprenorphine** is a semi-synthetic opioid of the phenanthrene class; it functions as a partial agonist at the μ-opioid receptor, as well as acting at other opioid receptors, and is used as an adjuvant to prolong and enhance the postoperative analgesic effect of local anesthetics. When combined, buprenorphine is typically added in microgram doses to ropivacaine for intrathecal, epidural, or nerve block anesthesia, leading to prolonged sensory blockade and improved postoperative pain control without significantly increasing side effects compared to ropivacaine alone[1][4][5][6][7]. This mixture does not have a unique, branded preparation and is typically formulated in hospital settings for procedural use.
