Overview
Bupropion + fluoxetine is a combination of two antidepressants with different mechanisms of action. Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI), while fluoxetine (Prozac) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). This dual-mechanism approach targets different neurotransmitter systems that regulate mood. The combination is sometimes used for treatment-resistant depression or when a patient has had an incomplete response to SSRI therapy alone, potentially providing enhanced antidepressant efficacy and mitigating SSRI-associated sexual dysfunction. However, it requires careful medical supervision due to potential interactions and carries significant risks including increased seizure potential (bupropion lowers the seizure threshold) and possible serotonin syndrome.
