Overview

SPINALON (buspirone + levodopa + carbidopa) is a combination therapy being developed by Nordic Life Science Pipeline Inc. for the treatment of chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). It is designed as a Central Pattern Generator (CPG) activator to induce locomotor movements. The therapy combines buspirone, a 5-HT1A receptor agonist, with levodopa and carbidopa to increase spinal levels of serotonin and dopamine, respectively. These monoamine neurotransmitters are typically depleted below the level of injury in SCI patients, and their restoration is intended to increase the excitability of spinal motor neurons and interneurons, potentially enhancing the efficacy of epidural electrical stimulation (EES) and locomotor training.
