Overview

BX-BC08 + LR-BC21 is an oral probiotic combination drug in development by Hong Kong Rising Biotechnology for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). The formulation consists of two specific bacterial strains: *Bifidobacterium animalis* subsp. *lactis* BX-BC08 and *Lactobacillus reuteri* LR-BC21. The drug operates via the gut-skin axis; preclinical research indicates that BX-BC08 modulates gut microbiota composition and promotes the production of alpha-Ketoglutaric acid (AKG), an anti-inflammatory metabolite. This metabolic shift suppresses T helper 2 (Th2)-driven skin inflammation and attenuates pro-inflammatory responses. While the developer also markets consumer-grade microbiome products, this specific combination has been the subject of clinical research published in the Journal of Translational Medicine in 2025.
