c-11 acetate + c-11 palmitate is a combination of two carbon-11 labeled radiopharmaceuticals used as metabolic tracers in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. C-11 acetate serves as a probe for oxidative metabolism (via the tricarboxylic acid cycle) and lipid synthesis, while C-11 palmitate is a radiolabeled long-chain fatty acid used to quantify fatty acid uptake and beta-oxidation. Developed and utilized by the Washington University School of Medicine, this combination is primarily employed in clinical research to study the pathophysiology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and hepatic metabolic dysfunction in obese populations. The tracers allow for the non-invasive, real-time assessment of how the liver processes fats, providing insights into the metabolic mechanisms underlying liver disease and the effects of interventions such as bariatric surgery.
