Drug intelligence / Profile preview
C1 is a topical aqueous gel formulation containing 2% cidofovir, developed by Mithra Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 2/3). Cidofovir is an acyclic nucleoside phosphonate that functions as a broad-spectrum antiviral by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase, thereby preventing the replication of human papillomavirus (HPV) in cervical lesions. This non-surgical approach involves applying the gel directly to the cervix, typically using a cervical cap for several hours. Mithra Pharmaceuticals has conducted Phase I and Phase II clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this localized treatment as an alternative to invasive surgical procedures like conization or the loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP).
