Overview

Berinert P is a pasteurized, human plasma-derived concentrate of C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH), a serine protease inhibitor that regulates the complement, contact, and fibrinolytic pathways. It is primarily used as a replacement therapy for patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE) who have a congenital deficiency of the C1 inhibitor protein. By restoring functional C1-INH levels, the drug prevents the over-activation of the contact system and the subsequent overproduction of bradykinin, which is the key mediator of the localized edema characteristic of HAE attacks. Berinert P is administered intravenously and is indicated for the treatment of acute abdominal, facial, and laryngeal attacks of HAE. It has been in clinical use since 1985 and received FDA approval in 2009.
